Post-renovation cleaning requires a structured, multi-stage approach to eliminate fine construction dust, chemical residues, and adhesive marks safely and effectively.
Step 1: Prep & Protect
- Safety Gear: Wear an N95 or KN95 mask, eye protection, and rubber gloves to protect against fine airborne particles and chemical fumes.
- Ventilation: Open windows for cross-ventilation, but keep HVAC return vents covered or turn off central air during the initial sweep to prevent dust from recirculating.
- Trash Removal: Clear out large debris, leftover materials, and plastic drop cloths before addressing dust.
Step 2: Clean Top-to-Bottom
- Ceilings & Walls: Use a microfiber mop with an extendable pole or a vacuum with a brush attachment to vacuum dry dust from ceilings, crown moldings, and wall surfaces.
- Fixtures & Vents: Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, switch plates, and HVAC vent covers.
- Windows & Mirrors: Scrape paint splatters or sticker residue with a razor blade at a flat 45-degree angle, then wipe frames, sills, and glass with a streak-free cleaner.
Step 3: Interior Cabinetry & Surfaces
- Inside Cabinets & Drawers: Vacuum out sawdust from inside kitchen and bathroom cabinets, drawers, and shelving, then wipe down with a damp microfiber cloth.
- Countertops & Trim: Wipe down baseboards, door frames, window sills, and hard surfaces using a mild, multi-surface detergent.
Step 4: Deep Floor Treatment
- HEPA Vacuuming: Vacuum all floors using a machine equipped with a HEPA filter to capture microscopic drywall and silica dust without blowing it back into the room.
- Double Mopping: For hard floors (tile, vinyl, sealed wood), mop once with clean warm water and a mild floor cleaner, let dry, and mop a second time to remove lingering haze.
- Upholstery & Carpets: Vacuum soft furnishings, curtains, and carpets thoroughly; consider a hot-water extraction (steam clean) if heavy dust settled into fabrics.
Step 5: Final Air Quality Reset
- Replace Filters: Swap out all HVAC and furnace air filters immediately to prevent trapped dust from cycling back into living spaces.
- Air Purifier: Run a HEPA air purifier on high in the renovated zones for 24–48 hours post-cleaning.
